How Breathalysers Work

Sobermate breathalysers use fuel cell sensor technology — the same type trusted by workplaces and professionals — to give you accurate, alcohol-specific readings every time.

1

Breath Sample Collected

You blow into the mouthpiece, and your breath passes over the fuel cell sensor.

2

Electrochemical Reaction

Alcohol in your breath reacts with the sensor, generating a small electrical current.

3

BAC Calculated & Displayed

The signal is converted into a BAC reading and shown on screen within seconds.

Why Fuel Cell Sensors?

Unlike cheaper semiconductor sensors, which can be triggered by substances like mouthwash or certain foods, fuel cell sensors react specifically to alcohol — giving you a more reliable, accurate result.

Sobermate FAQS

How Breathalysers Work

Accuracy varies slightly by model, ranging from ±0.005%BAC to ±0.01%BAC depending on the device. Check the individual product page for your model’s exact accuracy rating.

How often do I need to calibrate my device?

Calibration frequency depends on the model, ranging from every 6 months/500 tests up to every 12 months/1,000 tests. Your device will alert you when calibration is due.

What batteries does my Sobermate use?

All Sobermate handheld models run on 2 x AAA alkaline batteries. Always use fresh, non-rechargeable alkaline batteries for accurate results — rechargeable batteries can affect performance.

Can I use any mouthpiece with my device?

Sobermate mouthpieces are designed for Sobermate/AlcoSense-compatible devices. Using a non-compatible mouthpiece may affect the seal and accuracy of your reading. The S7 mouthpieces are only compatible with Sobermate devices.

What does the WARN light mean?

If your result is over the legal/safety threshold (commonly 0.05%BAC), the red WARN indicator lights up along with an alarm sound. A READY light means your result was below that threshold.
