The Sobermate S2 is a fuel cell breathalyser that shows your result as a %BAC reading. This page covers everything in the printed manual: setting up, taking a test, reading the lights and messages, and keeping the device calibrated.

What’s in the box

  • Sobermate S2 breathalyser x 1
  • AAA batteries x 2
  • Mouthpieces x 5
  • Instruction manual x 1

On the device you’ll find the mouthpiece slot, the display, the power button, the battery cover on the back, and the breath outlet. Don’t cover the breath outlet while testing.

Insert or replace the batteries

  1. Open the battery cover. Press lightly on the cover on the back of the unit, then push it down and away from the device.
  2. Fit both AAA batteries. Match the positive (+) and negative (-) ends to the markings inside the compartment.
  3. Close the cover.

Use brand new, non-heavy duty, non-rechargeable alkaline batteries for the best results.

When the battery voltage is low, the yellow LED flickers. Replace both batteries.

How to take a test

  1. Insert a mouthpiece into the mouthpiece slot.
  2. Press the power button. The display shows “on” and plays a welcome sound, then the device warms up for about 5 to 35 seconds.
  3. Blow when the device beeps and shows “bLo”. Blow steadily into the mouthpiece and keep going until you hear a second beep. Start within 20 seconds of “bLo” appearing, or the device switches itself off.
  4. Wait for the result. A circling line shows for about 3 to 22 seconds while the sample is analysed. The %BAC result then shows for around 15 to 20 seconds with a beep. Above 0.05%BAC, the red WARN light comes on with an alarm sound.
  5. Test again or switch off. Wait for the READY or WARN light to go out, then repeat from step 2. To switch off, hold the power button for 2 seconds.

Wait about 2 minutes between tests.

If the device isn’t used for about 20 seconds it switches off to save battery. Press the power button to turn it back on.

What the lights mean

Results show as a two-decimal %BAC reading, for example 0.05%BAC, which is the legal limit.

Green (READY). The device is ready for a test. It also lights when your result is below the warning level.

Yellow (BATT LOW). Flickers when the battery voltage is low. Replace the batteries.

Red (WARN). Your result is above 0.05%BAC. An alarm sounds with the light.

Display messages and troubleshooting

The display shows “Hot”

The result is above 0.40%BAC. An alarm sounds with the message.

The display shows “CAL”

The device has been used for over 500 tests and needs calibration. Book a calibration and send the device in.

The display shows “OUT” and the device switches off

The surrounding temperature is outside the working range of 5 to 40°C. Use and store the device within the recommended range, then switch it on again.

The device says the sample wasn’t strong enough

Switch the device on again and blow steadily and continuously for at least 3 to 5 seconds, until you hear the beep. Then press the power button to run another test.

The device switches off straight after a low battery signal

The batteries are too low to run a test. Replace them using the steps in the battery section above.
